Hypnosis – Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of many myths created by popular imagination. Some consider them to be some type of magic while others refuse to even acknowledge them. Following are some of the popular myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.

Hypnosis has no connection with any sort of mystical arts. It hinges more on the science of the human mind and is very easy to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after watching participants effectively experiencing its power in public sessions. They believe that the people who have been under hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to withstand the influence of the practitioner. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her levels of will power.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized person is fully alert of what is going on around him. That person is just in a calm state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive new inputs easily.

Some scientific findings have stated that only about 5% of humanity is suitable to be hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. Although, the finding has some element of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the researchers used the same hypnosis technique for everyone. Hypnosis can’t be oversimplified like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.

Many people take hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, while communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Trance is again a mental state devoid of any communication, whereas communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis technique.

A sizeable number of people believe that it is not possible to bring about changes in one’s looks and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. However, it can guide the body to a healthy shape through behavioural transformations like eating in a controlled manner, and quitting smoking and other addictions by ensuring a high level of inspiration in an individual.

Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a vital role to play in the overall welfare of a person, and not trying them out just because of some false notions is an act of folly.
